Under the supervision of Dr. Kligler and Dr. Lee, these students spend a month at the Center observing the practice and carrying out a research project of their own choosing. </p> <p>In addition, Drs. Kligler, Merrell and Lee are involved with the curriculum committee at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), working to include more teaching on the integrative approach into the undergraduate curriculum. This academic year there are new offerings in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course and in the Pharmacology of Alternative Approaches to Asthma at the AECOM. More new offerings will be added next year.</p> <table border='0' cellpadding='2' cellspacing='0'><tr><td width='12' valign='top' align='center' height='2'><font face='Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif' size='2' color='#FFFFFF'><img src='../images/bullet.gif' width='5' height='5' vspace='4'></font></td><td width='400' class='bullet'><b>Postgraduate Education<b></td></tr></table><br /> Over the past three years, the Beth Israel Medical Center Residency Program in Urban Family Practice has offered its residents a required curriculum in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in the month of February. The centerpiece of this curriculum is a one-month required block rotation in CAM in the second year of the residency program. In September 1999, the program instituted this required month rotation in CAM for the first time under the direction of course director Dr. Benjamin Kligler. This one month experience brings all the second year Family Medicine residents together for a four week block. During this time, participants receive twenty hours per week of didactic/experiential education in herbal medicine, hypnotherapy/mind-body medicine, nutritional medicine and osteopathic manipulation. The faculty for the month is interdisciplinary and includes nursing professionals, CAM practitioners, and physician faculty. The overall goal for the month is to have residents develop a basic understanding of each of the four modalities above, at a level sufficient to allow them to intelligently consider integrating these modalities into their discussions with their primary care continuity patients.</p> <p>The initial two days of the course are focused on issues of cultural diversity and sensitivity, an assessment of patients health beliefs, and on research issues in the area of CAM. This is followed by four to five mornings on each of the four major modalities covered. The course as a whole revolves around a system approach, using the cardiovascular and respiratory systems as a model. This systems approach allows for a more coherent overview of the modalities. Because it is felt that direct experience is the most effective teacher for physicians attempting to learn about CAM, the teaching in this course is largerly experiential, involving extensive practice periods in which residents implement their new skills with each other in role plays and sample cases. This required CAM month is the first residency program of its kind in the US and has been extremely well received. Many programs from around the nation have contacted us to request copies of our syllabus and our course schedule.
