Integrative Stress Management Classes

Caring for Yourself in the 21st Century

Are you craving some overdue rest, searching for respite from physical or emotional discomfort or looking for ways to unplug from the outside world and renew? Stress is a part of life but how we handle stress can be under our control. When we are stressed our bodies release a burst of fight or flight hormones that should then return to normal. But when stress is nonstop, our inner alarm system fails to shut off which deeply taxes our bodies.

At the Center for Health and Healing, we offer diverse approaches to reset your alarm system. We have designed a comprehensive stress management program for health promotion and healing using holistic approaches that integrate body, mind and spirit. This effective stress management program includes the use of simple relaxation techniques, imagery, meditation, aromatherapy, Reiki, biofeedback, and gentle yoga stretching. In this program, you will learn how to use these healing practices and incorporate them into your daily life to promote wellness and prevent disease.

By having a variety of options of healing techniques, you can find the approaches that work best for you to manage 21st century stress linked to 80% of today’s major medical conditions.

•Aromatherapy uses pure essential plant oils which are extracted, diluted, and taken in with the breath or applied to the body to reduce stress and promote a calm, relaxed state.
•Biofeedback is a safe and powerful therapy that, through self-observation, regulation, and mastery, teaches you how to adjust mental and physical functions to improve overall health.
•Imagery uses the power of imagination to reduce stress and promote health and well being.
•Reiki is a traditional Japanese healing practice used for deep relaxation, to ease physical and emotional discomforts, and to replenish your energy.
•Restorative Yoga uses soft stretches and gentle breathing that quiet the mind. It is equally valuable to those with compromised health states, healthy people and those with no prior yoga experience.
•Breathwork is a process of conscious breathing that becomes an effortless way to create a state of calm and inner quiet.
•Meditation focuses on calming the mind by concentrating on the breath or on a symbol of peace to reach a state of deep relaxation.

Stress affects everyone but managing stress will reduce its potential harmful effects on your body, mind and spirit. So step up to health and well-being, and come and join this practical Integrative Stress Management Program.

Integrative Stress Management (Series of 5 Classes)

Stress is a dynamic and complex interaction between a person and life. It describes our physical, mental, and emotional reactions to life’s various conditions, changes, and demands. When threatened, our body releases a burst of fight-or-flight response hormones, but then, levels return to normal. However, the nonstop stress of modern life means that our alarm system rarely shuts off and, over time, leads to serious chronic health problems.

This series of 5 Integrative Stress Management Classes provides you with practical and effective tools to reset your alarm system so your body is not on constant “red alert” and will help you manage 21st century stress, linked to 80% of today’s major medical conditions.

Session I: Aromatherapy, or essential oil therapy, is much more than surrounding yourself with pleasant botanical aromas. Pure essential oils are extracted from various parts of a plant, diluted, and taken in with the breath or by applying it on the body to reduce stress, and promote a calm, relaxed state. In aromatherapy, consideration of individual sensitivities and preferences is paramount to a safe and effective experience.

*Learn the “m” technique, a method of applying the essential oil to achieve an ultimate relaxed and calm state.

Materials:
Essential oils (may be purchased on site for a few dollars depending on the oil)

Session II: The power of Imagery can be used by anyone, in any situation, and at any time to access our vast inner resources. A skillful practitioner gently leads you into the world between reality and imagination that can be a source of great insight and wisdom. Imagery is often used to cope with challenging situations, to regain a sense of personal control, and to connect with our inner self.

Session III: Reiki (“rei” means universal and “ki” means vital life force or energy) is a traditional Japanese practice used for deep relaxation, to ease physical and emotional discomforts, for natural energy replenishment, and to enhance the body’s innate healing abilities. Reiki involves the practitioner’s gentle laying on of hands (or non-touch as preferred) on select locations on the body to bring energetic balance. Because you are fully clothed during the treatment, in a comfortable position, and involves only light touch — no deep pressure, manipulation, or massage – Reiki is available to just about everyone!

Session IV: Biofeedback is a safe, powerful therapy that, through self-observation, regulation, and mastery, teaches you how to effectively adjust mental and physical functions to improve overall health. Simple devices are used to measure and record “feedback” from the body, and this constant information then serves as a guide toward a deeper level of self-understanding and control.

Session V: Restorative Yoga honors the nurturing side of yoga by highlighting nearly effortless poses and gentle breathing that quiet the mind. This form of yoga uses soft stretches and the body’s own response to gravity to lead you into deep relaxation and profound inner healing. Because of this, restorative yoga is equally valuable to those with compromised health states as well as “healthy” people, yogis or those with no prior yoga experience alike.

Materials:
Wear comfortable clothing
2 beach towels or extra large bath towels
1 pair of clean tube socks (cotton preferred)

Breathwork and Meditation are included in each session: While we usually breathe without much thought, it is actually the foundation of self awareness and subtle communication with your body. The key is conscious breathing, or Breathwork. This practice transforms passive inhalation/exhalation into an active and progressive state of calm and inner quiet, promoting tranquility and a well-rooted connection with the physical and emotional body.

Meditation is a practice that focuses on calming the mind by concentrating on the breath or on a symbol of peace to reach a state of deep relaxation. Studies indicate that meditation may induce a host of biochemical and physical changes (the relaxation response) affecting metabolism, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and brain chemistry. While meditation has been used in multiple medical settings with the chronically and terminally ill, it is also a powerful part of self-care and good health maintenance.

All classes will be held at the Continuum Center for Health and Healing, a healing environment where you can learn, relax, and rejuvenate all at the same time.

Elaine Retholtz has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 1988. In 2004, she completed the internship in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and in 2005, the Teacher Development Intensive at the Center for Mindfulness in Worcester Massachusetts. She is also a graduate of the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders Program. Elaine has been teaching the traditional 8 week MBSR program at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan since 2005.

In addition, she adapted the MBSR program into a 3-day model suitable for use in institutions. At Tri-State College of Acupuncture, she teaches MBSR to first year students. Here she also guides students in cultivating mindfulness of the experience of learning to be acupuncturists and taking on the identity of healers.

As part of a facility-wide staff stress reduction initiative, she trained the staff at Rivington House, a residential facility for people living with AIDS. Pre and post measures of participating staff showed significant decreases in perceived stress and emotional exhaustion, and increases in self-compassion. As a result of her experience at Tri-State and Rivington House, she is very interested in using MBSR as a vehicle for institutional culture change.

Elaine is an associate teacher at New York Insight Meditation Center.
